A stately early-20th-century Prairie-influenced American Foursquare, distinguished by a grand Classical Revival front porch, broad overhanging eaves, original architectural detailing and substantial masonry construction. Built in 1909, this stately American Foursquare stands as a beautiful reminder of Ellsworth's evolution from legendary Kansas cowtown to an established early-20th-century community. Prairie-influenced proportions, broad overhanging eaves and a distinctive dormer are complemented by an impressive Classical Revival front porch with substantial brick-and-stone masonry. More than a century later, the home's architecture still carries the permanence, craftsmanship and presence of its era. This classic historic home is situated in one of the famous wild-west cattle towns of Ellsworth, KS. History is abound with this home and its stately setting. Wellington as a wedding gift for his son Waldo. Edward Winslow "E.W." Wellington was a major Ellsworth developer. He was Harvard-educated, came west in the 1870s, eventually acquired about 12,000 acres in Ellsworth County, established the Monte Carneiro Ranch, and moved into Ellsworth in 1887. Contemporary/early historical accounts credit him with constructing more business blocks and residences in Ellsworth than any other individual of that period. He was also associated with the city's sewer system, cement sidewalks, real estate, insurance, loans and abstracting. Ellsworth's famous cattle-drive period came first. Wellington arrived afterward and participated in the next phase: turning the frontier/cowtown into a more permanent commercial and residential community. He built commercial properties, invested in infrastructure and developed residences. The National Register documentation for the Ellsworth Downtown Historic District specifically discusses Wellington's extensive redevelopment activity from the late 1890s into about 1911-the exact era in which 201 Forest was constructed.
